Earlier in this month, German Government has sent a letter to TKMS&Lürssen Consortium stating that they were excluded from the bidding.
The decision was disclosed in a notice sent to the firm’s shipyards by the ministry’s purchasing agency. The letter said the government did not trust ThyssenKrupp and its partner, Lürrsen shipyards, to build the new Multi-role Combat Ship 180 (MKS 180 for short), which is designed to operate anywhere in the world, including in polar seas. The agency also said the consortium’s proposed price of €4 billion ($4.9 billion) for four warships was too high.

Damen Shipyards stated in a letter which was sent to German parliament members that they are ready to build German’s new MKS180 frigates at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg .
The Europe-wide tendering process for the six ships is expected to be concluded this year. In addition to being late, the ships are already €500 million over budget. Germany initially wanted to order four ships with options for two more but defense minister Ursula von der Leyen announced in February 2017 that the ministry would order all six ships right away.
The first ship in the class is being planned to enter service in 2023.
Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works handed over two new high speed boats to Pakistan Customs on 10 March. The celebration was attended by distinguished guests including Dr Miftah Ismail, advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance, Revenue & Economic Affairs, Mr. Iftikhar Ahmed, Collector Pakistan Customs, Rear Admiral Syed Hasan Nasir Shah, Managing Director of KS&EW and Mrs. Ardi Stoios-Braken, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The vessels were built by KS&EW with technical and material support from Damen. The entire project took just eight months and was completed successfully thanks to the high level of cooperation and trust between the two partners. The patrolling boats shall be used for monitoring and enforcement activities in Pakistan’s territorial waters.
The boats measure 15.7 m in length and have a displacement of 20 tonnes with maximum speed of 33 knots. They are equipped with 7.6mm and 12.5mm machine guns at aft position. The vessels are powered by two Volvo Penta marine diesel engines and two water jets.
Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) has received an order from Armscor – the acquisition agency for the South African Department of Defence – for three Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPV), the company announced on 26 February.
The project aims to develop South Africa’s maritime security, ensuring that the country has the capability to respond effectively, rapidly and cost-efficiently to maritime threats such as illegal trafficking and fishing.
“We are very happy to receive this order and are looking forward to this continuation of our long-standing relationship with the South African Navy.” said Chairman Mr. Sam Montsi.
The 62m-long, 11m-wide vessels are slated to be the first ships constructed based on the Damen Sea Axe design to enter service with the South African Navy.
Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and PT PAL Indonesia have delivered the second SIGMA 10514 Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR)-class frigate to the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) on Monday, October 30.
The vessel which was jointly constructed by Dutch shipbuilding company Damen and PT PAL under the Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) programme, was launched in September 2016 and is expected to be commissioned later this year.
The 105-metre, 2365 tonne PKR frigates are designed to undertake a wide range of missions in and around the waters of Indonesia, an archipelago nation made up of over 18,000 islands. Their primary mission is anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. However, they are also equipped for maritime security, search and rescue, and humanitarian support tasks.
The SIGMA 10514 PKR guided-missile frigate has a speed of 28kt. It can sail up to a range of 5,000nm at a 14kt speed and can endure for 20 days at sea.
