7th FREMM frigate Federico Martinengo delivered to Italian Navy

The frigate “Federico Martinengo” was delivered to Italian Navy in April 24 at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia. It is the seventh of a series of 10 FREMM vessels of the FREMM program.

According to official press release; “Federico Martinengo” is the seventh unit built by Fincantieri including the combat system, the third in multipurpose configuration after the “Carlo Bergamini” and the “Luigi Rizzo”, delivered to the Italian Navy respectively in 2013 and 2017. Reaching a length of 144 meters and with a displacement at full load of approximately 6,700 tons, the FREMM frigates represent technological excellence: designed to reach a maximum speed of 27 knots and to provide accommodation for 200 people (crew and staff), these vessels are able to always guarantee a high degree of flexibility and to operate in a wide range of scenarios and tactical situations.

The FREMM program, representing the European and Italian defence state of the art, stems from the renewal need of the Italian Navy line “Lupo” (already removed) and “Maestrale” (close to the attainment of operational limit) class frigates, both built by Fincantieri in the 1970s.

The vessels “Carlo Bergamini” and “Virginio Fasan” have been delivered in 2013, the “Carlo Margottini” in 2014, the “Carabiniere” in 2015 and the “Alpino” in 2016. The Italian program has been fully implemented with the option exercised in April 2015, regarding the construction of the ninth and tenth vessel, whose delivery is scheduled after 2020.

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (51% Fincantieri, 49% Finmeccanica) acts as prime contractor for Italy in the initiative, while Armaris (DCNS + Thales) is prime contractor for France.

Leonardo – FREMM Multi-Mission Stealth Frigate Electronic & Weapon Systems Simulation

The FREMM programme was created as part of an international agreement in which Italy and France are united by a naval military cooperation agreement. In Italy, the FREMM programme is coordinated by Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a Fincantieri (51%) and Leonardo (49%) consortium.

Leonardo chosen to lead Ocean 2020 Project

Leonardo announced that the signature of  the grant agreement for OCEAN2020, the most important project related to the initiative to boost Europe’s defence research under the European Defence Fund.

The Ocean2020 project supports maritime surveillance and interdiction missions at sea and to that end will integrate drones and unmanned submarines into fleet operations. The information acquired will be combined with conventional systems to build up a comprehensive picture of developing situations for military commanders.

The project will be run by a consortium led by Leonardo S.p.A, bringing together 42 partners from 15 EU countries. It will receive a grant of around €35 million. In 2019, the project will stage two real-life demonstrations – one in the Baltics led by the Swedish navy and one in the Mediterranean led by the Italian navy.

The project aims to enhance situational awareness in a maritime environment by using manned and unmanned systems and building a complete picture on the basis of many different inputs. Defence Ministries in Estonia, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom are involved. The industrial partners are: Indra, Safran, Saab, MBDA, PGZ/CTM Hensoldt, Intracom-IDE, Fincantieri and Qinetiq. Research centres include Fraunhofer, the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek (TNO), the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE NATO) and the Italian Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI).

Leonardo presented its new Marlin 40 naval gun mount for the first time in Doha, Qatar.

According to Leonardo; lightweight, flexible and offering high performance, the Marlin 40 is the ideal choice for small and fast vessels involved in patrol operations

The new OTO Marlin 40 naval turret has been designed for Navies, which are increasingly engaged in patrol operations using fast, lightweight vessels, but still require high-performance equipment.
The Marlin 40 provides superior performance for challenging missions such as anti-missile defence, anti-aircraft warfare and ship-to-ship engagement. The gun features a dry weight of only 2,100 kg in its remotely controlled version, high maneuverability (the barrel can move at 120°/s thanks to powerful and accurate servo-systems), and the ability to fire multi-purpose programmable fused ammunition.

Fincantieri FREMM evolving into US Navy FFG(X)

The US Navy awarded to Fincantieri’s subsidiary Marinette Marine a $15M contract to evolve its FREMM-design into the next-generation frigate of the FFG(X) program.

Currently, 6 FREMM frigates are in service with the Italian Navy and have successfully completed multi-role missions world-wide. The units of the FREMM class have also been chosen in Australia for the final stage of the SEA5000 tender to acquire 9 Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates for the Royal Australian Navy.

According to Fincantieri press release; Fincantieri Marinette Marine has teamed with Gibbs & Cox and Trident Maritime Systems to evolve FREMM to U.S. design standards. This wholly American team will develop a ship design, which, in case of award of the construction contract, would be built at Fincantieri shipyards in the US, where, over the past 9 years the company has developed a highly skilled workforce, an extensive supply chain and expertise in building ships to US Navy standards.

Fincantieri lays keel for Italian Navy LHD

The keel laying ceremony of the multipurpose amphibious unit (LHD or Landing Helicopter Dock) took place at Fincantieri’s shipyard on 20th of February 2018 in Castellammare di Stabia, marking the beginning of the slipway works of the unit.

Construction on the ship started with a steel cutting ceremony on July 12, 2017, and the delivery is expected for 2022.

The unit will be approx. 215 meters long with a maximum speed of 25 knots. It will be equipped with a combined propulsion system diesel/electric and gas turbines (CODLOG).

According to Fincantieri Press Release; The vessel will have both military and civil profile.

The LHD’s main mission is the transport of people, vehicles and loads of different kinds and in their transfer on land in port areas through on board systems and in not equipped areas with on board staffing vessels (such as the LCM landing craft units with a load capacity up to 60 tons, four of which can be admitted, launched, and recovered through a flooded basin, located on the stern of the vessel).

The civil profile use provides:

  • healthcare and hospital support
  • transfer and landing of people and wheeled or crawled means of transport in equipped and non-equipped areas
  • supply of drinking water to land through onboard desalination plants or storages
  • supply of electricity to land with 2000 kw of power and its distribution through containerized conversion and distribution units
  • possibility of accommodating specialized staff on board or hosting up to 700 civilian personnel, plus the same number in containerized residential units
  • rescue operations base through helicopters and boar staffing vessels

On board there will be a fully equipped hospital, complete with operating rooms, radiology and analysis rooms, a dentist’s office, and a hospital rooms capable of hosting 28 seriously injured patients (further admissions are possible through duly equipped container modules).

Fincantieri has launched 8th Carlo Bergamini Class (FREMM) Frigate

The launching ceremony of the “Antonio Marceglia” frigate, the eighth of a series of 10 FREMM vessels – Multi Mission European Frigates, took place on 3rd of February at the integrated shipyard of Riva Trigoso (Genoa).

Italian Minister of Defence, Roberta Pinotti and, on behalf of the Chief of Defence, General Claudio Graziano, the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, Admiral Valter attended the ceremony.

The Carlo Bergamini Class vessels will feature a high degree of flexibility, capable of operating in all tactical situations. 144 metres long with a beam of 19.7 metres, the ship will have a displacement at full load of approximately 6,700 tonnes. The vessel will have a maximum speed of over 27 knots and will provide accommodation for a 200-person crew.

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (51% Fincantieri, 49% Leonardo) acts as prime contractor for Italy in the initiative, while Armaris (Naval Group + Thales) is prime contractor for France.

Italy; 7th of Carlo Bergamini-class frigate (FREMM) conducted her maiden voyage

The frigate’s first voyage came less than five months after it was launched at the Riva Trigoso shipyard in Genoa.

Federico Martinengo is the 7th ship of the class.

Italy will build ten ships in the Carlo Bergamini-class, four anti-submarine variants and six general-purpose variants.

Federico Martinengo is scheduled to be delivered to the navy by April 2018.

Italy receives fourth Type 212A

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri handed over the last of four Type 212A-class diesel-electric submarines on order for the Italian Navy at its Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard on 11 May.

The most significant enhancements over the earlier batch are Atlas Elektronik’s electro-acoustic suite update to the fully digitalised CSU 90-138 sonar system, Cassidian’s OMS100 search periscope (replacing the in-service conventional systems), Hensoldt’s SERO 400 (attack) periscopes, Kongsberg’s MSI-90U Mk 2 weapon-control system and the WASS Black Shark Advanced (NSP/BSA) heavyweight torpedo.
